Samatoform 1: Body Dismorphic Disorder


Katharine Phillips, MD

Dr. Phillips graduated Summa Cum Laude from Dartmouth College and received her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. She completed her internship at Dartmouth Medical School and her residency at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Phillips is an internationally recognized researcher and expert on body dysmorphic disorder. She currently has a number of research grants on body dysmorphic disorder, including several funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. She has received numerous honors and awards for her research, research mentoring, and other academic accomplishments, including a Special Presidential Commendation from the American Psychiatric Association for her research on body dysmorphic disorder.

Dr. Phillips has more than 250 publications, and she has written several books on body dysmorphic disorder for professionals and the public. To disseminate information about body dysmorphic disorder to both professionals and the public, she has given many invited presentations around the world.  

Dr. Phillips is chair of the DSM-5 Work Group on Anxiety, Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum, Post-Traumatic, and Dissociative Disorders, and she is a member of the DSM-5 Task Force. She is a fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, a member of the American College of Psychiatrists, and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Phillips is on the scientific advisory boards of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America and the International OCD Foundation. From 2002-2006, she was chair of the National Institute of Mental Health’s Interventions Research Review Committee (Scientific Review Group). Dr. Phillips additionally serves on a number of editorial boards, and she has repeatedly been included in Best Doctors in America.
