Barry Cole, MD
B. Eliot Cole, MD, MPA, is the Medical Director for the Shoals Hospital Senior Care Center in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He has served as Executive Director for the American Society of Pain Educators in Montclair, New Jersey; Interim Executive Director, Administrator for Pain Program Accreditation, and Director of Education for the American Academy of Pain Management in Sonora, California; Vice Chair of Psychiatry for the University of Nevada School of Medicine in Las Vegas, Nevada; and Statewide Medical Program Coordinator for the Nevada Division of Mental Health in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dr. Cole was a pain management consultant for Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Dr. Cole received his MD from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine (Bowman Gray) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, his Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and his undergraduate degree in Bacteriology from the University of California, Berkeley, California. He performed residencies in both Psychiatry and Neurology at the Wake Forest University Medical Center (North Carolina Baptist Hospital) in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and an anesthesia-related fellowship in Pain Management at the University of California, Los Angeles’ Center for Health Sciences. The American Psychiatric Association awarded Dr. Cole fellowship status in 1995 and Distinguished Fellow status in 2002.
Dr. Cole has been active in pain management since 1985, as a pain management fellow, a clinician, and an active member of many pain-related organizations. He has worked as a consultation/liaison psychiatrist, developed rural geropsychiatric services, has been a medical administrator, and has practiced as a hospice physician and a pain practitioner.
Dr. Cole has lectured nationally and internationally about the pathophysiology of pain, management of pain, care of the terminally ill, psychiatric disorders, medical policy-making, and ethical issues.
